Over 270,000 child laborers profiled nationwide

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Sunday has profiled 274,924 child laborers in the country.

“This is indeed unfortunate. This is why we had to work doubly hard to arrest the situation,” Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said in a statement.

DOLE also reported assisting nearly 340,000 minors and their families, through intensified implementation of the government’s child labor prevention and elimination program amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the labor department reported 293,318 were referred for assistance while over 47,000 were removed from child labor.

“Along with our campaign to protect the vulnerable workers, we also stepped up our efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor,” Bello said.

Bello also noted that since the pandemic have affected livelihood, children of poor families has been drawn into some worst forms of child labor.
