"This is incompetence, plain and simple."

Senator Kiko Pangilinan on Saturday night rebukes Health Secretary Francisco Duque III's statement that a travel ban on the United Kingdom should only be considered once there is already a community transmission of the new COVID-19 variant in the country.

“This best explains why ours is the worst performing gov't Covid response in the Asean and the rest of the Western Pacific region,” Pangilinan said in a tweet.

Duque during a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte and other members of the Cabinet made the remark which has also caused exasperation among Filipinos.

Duque’s office, however, clarified that the Health chief was referring to countries with the reported cases of the new variant, not just in the UK.

The Philippines has suspended flights from the United Kingdom to the Philippines starting Dec. 24 over fears of a new strain of the virus.

Several countries have already imposed a travel ban on the UK, including Canada, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, and Germany, to prevent the new strain’s entry.
