Health Secretary Francisco Duque III urged the public to respect President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to be vaccinated privately and his preference to be immunized in his buttocks instead of the arm.

Duque noted that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth was also immunized in private. He also remains hopeful that Duterte’s decision may change.

“Let's respect that, ang kanyang decision na halintulad sa monarchy ng England [his decision that is similar to the decision of England's monarch]," Duque said in a media briefing. "That is the choice of the President. Hopefully he might still change his mind because some world leaders have openly had themselves vaccinated in public,’ Duque said.

The health chief assured the public that the COVID-19 vaccine injected in the buttocks will have the same effect as receiving it in the upper arm.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that getting injected in the buttocks will be an option if injecting in the arm is not possible.

"Ang common practice dito is kapag ang isang tao ay hindi pwede, kung ang kanyang deltoid area ay masyadong payat na payat na, binibigay natin sa ibang parte ng katawan na muscular, pwedeng sa anterolateral part ng thighs or upper part of the butt. Pwede maghanap ng ibang masasaksakan kung sakaling may indikasyon na hindi pwede sa braso ibigay," she said.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque earlier confirmed that Duterte’s decision is final as he wants to be vaccinated in his buttocks.
