Malacañang said Thursday it is President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘personal’ choice to get doses of coronavirus vaccine privately and he does not need to provide further explanation.

“That’s his personal decision. I don’t think he has to explain,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in an online briefing.

Roque earlier said that Duterte will adopt the vaccination taken by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, who got vaccinated against the infectious disease in private.

In August, Duterte said he is willing to be the first vaccine recipient to prove the vaccine’s efficacy and safety. However, his tone changed last week, saying those who are under priority list are the ones to get inoculated first and government officials are the last to receive doses.

Nearly half of Filipinos do not want to receive vaccines due to safety and efficacy concerns, according to an earlier Pulse Asia survey.
