The recommendation to give students a passing grade due to coronavirus pandemic impact is unfair, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Saturday.

In an interview over DZBB, Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said many learners are giving efforts to pass amid challenges, while some not taking it seriously.

While acknowledging the recommendation in a bid to reduce and address the students’ stress and anxiety, San Antonio said that teachers can offer help to their learners.

The education official said that implementation of no fail policy would not educate responsibility among students.

Amid the pandemic, DepEd decided to conduct distance learning modalities for the school year 2020-2021, which started last October 5.

It also removed around 60% of the curriculum to adjust for the remote learning approach this school year, which started October 5.

The department has prepared for ways to deliver education to students through self-learning modules, broadcast media, and the internet.

Some groups called for academic freeze due to challenges that are being faced by parents, teachers, and students due to distance learning implementation.

DepEd, however, implemented academic ease in a bid to reduce the burden among learners and teachers.
