Red Lions dominates Pirates, opens title defense in strong fashion

San Beda Red Lions started its title defense strong as they crushed the host school Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates, 79-63, in the NCAA season 100 men's basketball opener on September 7 at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Red Lions quickly established their superiority early in the game, leading to a decisive victory over the Pirates after a stronger second half.
"I'm just happy na we were able to perform what we practiced, 'yung game plan namin," San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta stated in a post game interview.
Bryan Sajonia led the charge for the Red Lions squad as he finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds.
Holding on to their confidence after bringing home the championship last season, San Beda took control of the game and was able to set up a 20-point lead, 31-11, early in the second quarter.
The Pirates answered back with a 13-0 run to cut it down to four, 33-29, but the Red Lions regrouped and ended the half with a 44-29 advantage.
San Beda dominated the second half with three treys from Jomel Puno, rookie JC Bonzalida, and RC Calimag, giving them a comfortable 75-52 score.
Bonzalida scored two more consecutive baskets to secure the victory.
Veteran Yukien Andrada also contributed for the Red Lions with 13 points and six boards while Season 99 Finals MVP James Payosing added eight points , five rebounds, and three assists.
Mclaude Guadaña, on the other hand, carried the offense of LPU with a career high 22 points alongside with nine rebounds.
