Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday conveyed his interest in running for the vice president position  — as long as he is in tandem with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio.

In an interview with ANC Headstart, Gatchalian stated that while it is still being discussed with groups, he is vying for the vice president position in the 2022 elections.

“I feel that I can contribute much more to the executive when I go back to the executive side and practice everything that I’ve learned,” he said when asked about the reason behind his interest. Adding that he learned a lot in public service and has solutions to various issues and problems that the country is facing.

Furthermore, he says problems such as economic growth should be tackled with someone who has experience. He feels that he has gained a lot of experience in the past 20 years that can contribute to the country’s recovery.

Gatchalian clarifies that he will not run for the position unless he is Duterte-Carpio’s running-mate, saying he already signified his intention with her when they talked about his plans as senate earlier this year.

He adds that the possibility of him running for vice president under Hugpong ng Pagbabago opened up when he was invited to be a part of their senate slate.

The senator says he is “still talking” to Senate President Vicente Sotto III, chairman and another prospective vice presidential candidate under the Nationalist People’s Coalition. He assures that no conflict will be made between them.
