DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the educational value of their partnership with Khan Academy to aid the Philippines’ learners and teachers.

“It’s really an amazing tool, one of the amazing phenomena of our time. What’s really amazing is not only what it actually does when it operates, but it helps our students, helps our parents, helps our teachers,” Angara said in a speech.

Khan Academy PH will provide access to online course content to develop the competencies of learners in numeracy and literacy, such as tutorials and practice tests in math subjects of grades 1, 4, 5, and 7.

Angara said that this platform may improve the performance of Filipino public school students in the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) examinations.

“Definitely makakatulong ito sa Pisa natin, if not 2025, 2029 dahil nakabase siya doon sa learner e. Dahil kung mahina ang learner, marami siyang makukuha doon sa software,” he added.

Khan Academy PH President Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine assured improvements on the platform were even more tailored to accommodate learners on the new MATATAG curriculum.

“Initial data trends have shown a correlation between consistent platform usage and increased math scores. Ang aming hangarin ngayon ay magpatuloy ang positive trends na ito habang nagpapalawak sa iba pang rehiyon sa mga bansa,” she added.

DepEd will provide translation of the educational content to ensure Filipino learners and teachers can maximize the "safe and fun" learning tools of the Khan Academy PH courses.

The partnership is eyeing to aid one million learners in the Philippines by 2028.

In the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment results, the Philippines ranked sixth lowest out of 81 participating countries in reading comprehension, mathematics, and science.
