The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) confirmed that the country has recorded community transmissions of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

According to PGC Executive Director Dr. Cynthia Saloma, they have seen community transmissions based on their analysis and studies.

“Ako professionally, and we at the Philippine Genome Center, while we do our analysis, and we try to link the cases, and based on the phylogenetic tree that we are doing, it is really a community transmission,” Saloma said.

The executive director also said that the surge of COVID-19 cases is likely due to the Delta variant.

“Sa aking palagay ha… nakikita natin ‘yung Delta is associated with very sudden rise of cases,” Saloma said.

Saloma added that the Delta variant is seen to be the cause “to a large degree,” and that the surge is also experienced by the Philippines’ neighbors in Southeast Asia.
