Reklamong libel ni Cusi, Uy vs. media outlets, harassment sa mga journalists — NUJP

Iginiit ng National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) na malinaw na pananakot sa mga mamamahayag ang pagsampa ng reklamong cyberlibel nina Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi at dating campaign donor ni Pangulong Duterte na si Dennis Uy laban sa pitong media outlets sa bansa.
Nitong Biyernes, Disyembre 3, nagsampa ng kaso si Cusi laban sa 18 opisyal at reporter ng Manila Bulletin, ABS-CBN News, BusinessWorld, Rappler, Philippine Star, GMA News, at Business Mirror dahil umano sa paglalathala ng mga ito sa graft complaint na inihain sa kanila sa kontrobersyal na Malampaya gas field buyout.
"These complaints, filed at the same time across seven news organizations, are clear harassment suits meant to intimidate and chill the press," pahayag ng NUJP sa kanilang facebook post.
Humihingi si Cusi ng hindi bababa sa P200 milyon mula sa mga news organization para sa mga umano'y “damage” na natamo niya dahil sa nai-post na artikulo.
Sinabi naman ng Unyon na ang mga kuwentong inilathala ng mga mamamahayag ay nakabatay sa mga press conference, press release at reklamomg isinampa sa Office of the Ombudsman.
Ayon sa reklamong inihain ni Cusi, inakusahan daw siya ng mga inireklamong mamamahayag ng graft o pagnanakaw sa kaban ng bayan.
Tugon naman ng NUJP, "a total misunderstanding, if not a deliberate way to mislead the public, of the role of the journalists. The journalists did not accuse him; the complainants did. The journalists only covered the complaints".
Sa isang pahayag, idiniin ni Cusi na "there is a fair and humane way to settle misunderstandings and differences without resorting to malicious reporting" na kinontra ng samahan at sinabing hindi negosyante, politiko, brokers, lobbyists ang press para ayusin ang mga 'misunderstanding' kundi tagalathala ng tulad nito.
“Journalists are not businessmen, politicians, brokers, or lobbyists out to find a way to ‘settle misunderstandings and differences. If there are misunderstandings and differences— journalists are here to report them, not to settle," wika pa ng NUJP.
Hinimok ng NUJP si Cusi na ihinto ang mga reklamo at sa halip ay "focus his attention on explaining to the public what happened in the Malampaya gas deal.”
Inulit din ng grupo ang panawagan nito na i-decriminalize ang libel at igalang ang demokratikong espasyo ng pag-iingat ng tseke sa mga opisyal ng gobyerno.
“May we remind Secretary Cusi of what the Supreme Court said about public officials suing for libel: Without a vigilant press, the government’s mistakes would go unnoticed, their abuses unexposed, and their wrongdoings uncorrected," diin pa ng organisasyon.
